I had always had dogs in
my life- varying from
GSD's to cocker spaniels
to English Setters whilst
still with my mother.
One day during one of the
the first terms at university
I saw 2 dogs tied to a hook
on the wall outside the
university smithy. Bothe
were barking at the
indignity of being unable
to escape. They were a
beagle and a basset.
Those barks were so deep
and long drawn that I had
to have one of my own. I
bought a beagle called
Nicky - however he was so
destructive that having
another one never
appealed to me. In stead a
miniature long haired
Dachshund called Laddie
soon joined my little home.
Whilst still at university I
met a couple of girls who
were both breeding and
showing Old English
Sheepdogs . I used to
study in their home and
their enthusiasm was very
contagious. I was nuts
about dogs so it was very
easy for me to get caught
up in the dream of wanting
to do the same- However I
still didn't know which
breed
Like me Kari had also always
had animals in her life. As a
child in Norway it was cats and
a Norwegian Bug Hound. In
Australia with her husband and
kids it was cats and a golden
retriever. When I met her she
had a very naughty miniature
poodle.
In 1980 Kari and I opened our
Boarding Kennels. About a
month later I remember a
10 month old wire fox
terrier called Susie came
to stay with us for 3
weeks. It was love at first
sight. I remember running
into the house and
shouting to Kari that I at
long last had found the
dog of my dreams. Within
a month we had bought
little Sigi
Sigi entered our lives approx
September 1980 - the sweetest
little scoundrel you ever have
seen who was sure that
everything running on 4 legs
was there just for her to catch
and tease and if needs be kill.
The best ratter of all the dogs we have ever had .
She taught us to love the wire Fox Terrier breed
and ever since we have always had wires in our
lives . She also taught us how important good
breeding both for temperament but also for
conformation is.
And from those humble beginnings the Scanwyre
Kennels came into existence.
